Femto-LASIK replaces the traditional blade step of LASIK surgery with a femtosecond laser, creating a thin corneal flap with more precision and consistency before a second laser reshapes the cornea to correct the vision error. It's one of the most widely performed and longest-tracked vision correction procedures globally, with a strong long-term safety record. The procedure itself takes around 15 minutes per eye under local anaesthetic drops; most patients notice a dramatic improvement in vision within hours and are back to normal activities within a few days, though a short pre-op assessment (corneal mapping, thickness and dryness checks) is required to confirm suitability. Popular with patients who are tired of glasses or contact lenses and want a single, well-established procedure with fast visual recovery.

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a more recent, flapless technique: a femtosecond laser creates a small lens-shaped piece of corneal tissue beneath the surface, which is then removed through a tiny incision just a few millimetres wide - no flap is cut, unlike LASIK. Because the corneal surface stays more intact, many patients experience less dry-eye and less post-operative discomfort, which is why it's often recommended for patients who are more prone to dry eyes or who play contact sports. Suitability depends on your prescription and corneal thickness, confirmed during a pre-op assessment; recovery is typically just as fast as LASIK, with clear vision within a day or two.
